Combine this with a sorting tip to make it even more useful (i.e. To delete the last 5 messages that you have sent (checkmarks), press ALT Key then the letter O (for outgoing) this will show all of your sent messages, then per this tip scroll down and select the last five.

- BlackBerry Tips and Tricks

Shortcuts and Tricks for Your BlackBerry:

General Tips:

1. Roll the trackball to scroll horizontally in any field where you can enter/edit or view text.
2. Roll the trackball vertically to scroll vertically or to go to different fields to change options.
3. Hold the Shift (CAP) key while you roll the trackball to select multiple items in a list (such as
messages). You can use this to delete multiple messages, for example.
4. Type the first letter of an item in an options list or menu to jump directly to that item.
5. Type the first letters of a name or the first few letters of the first name & last name
separated by a space to quickly find a contact in the Address Book screen. e.g. 'jo sm' to find
John Smith.
6. Press C to compose a new message from within Messages.
7. Rearrange the ribbon (menu): In the Home (icon) screen, press the menu key to bring up a
menu. You can then select Move or Hide an icon. If you have hidden an icon, you can choose
Show All to show it again. A hidden icon will appear with an X over it or shadowed. To
un-hide press the menu key while on it and uncheck Hide icon.
8. The Blackberry display can be adjusted to allow reading messages while conserving battery
power. Go to Options icon, Screen/Keyboard. Change the Backlight Brightness to 40% and
set the Backlight Timeout to 1 Minute or perhaps 90 Seconds.
9. If you've lost signal or data coverage, try turning the radio off/on by going to Manage
Connections. Uncheck then recheck the box for Mobile Network. Also, try going into Options,
Host Routing Table and clicking the menu key, then selecting 'Register Now. After doing this
you should receive a registration message from your wireless carrier. If this fails, pull out
battery and reboot BlackBerry.
10. Password protect your BB: To set a password, go to the Options menu. If you have a
Password option, select that. If not, Click on Security Settings, General Settings. In either
case, change Password to Enabled. Select the desired Security Timeout value, then click the
menu key and choose Save. You will be prompted to enter a new password and confirm the
new password. You should also go to the Owner item in the Options menu and enter your
name, a phone number (other than your BlackBerry), etc. When the password protection
kicks in, this owner information is displayed on the screen. NOTE: If the wrong password is
entered 10 times, the BlackBerry will perform a security wipe and delete all data stored on
the device.
11. To support more than one email signature: Go to Messages, then click the Menu Key and
choose Options, then choose Email settings. Change the Use Auto Signature to No. Then use
'AutoText' to add the alternate signatures you wish to use. See AutoText.
12. AutoText: Create your own abbreviations by going to Options, AutoText. Click the menu
key and choose New. Enter an abbreviation then enter the text that will replace that
abbreviation. Choose Specified Case if the replacement text is a proper noun, otherwise
choose SmartCase. If the replacement text is at the beginning of a sentence, the first letter
will be capitalized, if it occurs in mid-sentence, it will be lower case.

Hold the ALT key while you roll the thumb-wheel to scroll horizontally in any field where you can enter or view text.

Message Tips:

Navigating:

1. Enter or spacebar: scroll down a page/screen at a time.
2. ALT-Enter: scroll back a page/screen at a time.
3. b: scroll to bottom of page or list.
4. t: scroll to top of page or list.
5. u: jump to closest unread message in a list.
6. n: jump to next message.
7. p: jump to previous message.
8. backspace/delete key: delete previous character while typing or delete message if viewing it
in a list.

Reply-to/Forward:

1. R: Reply to this message.
2. L: Reply to all.
3. F: Forward this message.

Select Text:

1. Press the Shift key and then scroll the trackball to select (highlight) text. If you release the
Shift key and scroll the trackball you will select entire lines. Press the Shift key again at any
time to start selecting by character again.
2. Hold down ALT key + CLICK the trackball (click it don't hold it down), release the trackball
and then use it to scroll (select) whole lines. You can press and hold the ALT key at anytime
to start selecting by character again.
3. Click Menu key and choose SELECT from the menu. Roll the trackball down to select entire
line. Click trackball again and select copy.

With either method, click the trackball and select 'Cut' or 'Copy'... To paste, go to insertion point, or open a new message or whatever, click the trackball, and then select 'Paste'.

Composing Message Tips:

1. Press and hold a letter to capitalize it.
2. Press the SPACE key twice to insert a period and capitalize the next letter.
3. When typing in an Email field, press the SPACE key to insert the "@" and "." (period). e.g.
Type: john xyz com to create: john@xyz.com. Backspace and type again
to over-ride this like you would with AutoText.
4. Press and hold a letter key and roll the trackball to scroll through international/accent
characters, equation symbols and other marks.
5. For other symbols, press Symbol (SYM) key. Scroll to highlight a symbol then click trackball,
or type the letter shown below that symbol.

Calendar Tips:

(From Calendar screen, click Menu key & choose Options, then General Options. Change 'Enable Quick Entry' to NO.)

1. Press T to go to "Today" in the Calendar screen.
2. Press N or Space to go to Next (day, week or month, depending on the view you are in).
3. Press P to go to Previous: (day, week or month, depending on the view you are in).
4. Click Trackball to create a new entry.
5. Press A to go to Agenda View.
6. Press M to go to Monthly View.
7. Press W to go to Weekly View.
8. Press D to go to Daily View.
9. Press G to go to a specific date in the Calendar screen.

Battery Tips:

1. The largest draw on battery power is the transmitter, so if you are transmitting a lot (such
as while on the phone), you can expect reduced battery life.
2. Being in fringe or no coverage areas will eat up your battery as well, since the BlackBerry
frequently attempts to connect with the tower. If you're in this situation, you can go to the
Manage Connections icon and uncheck Mobile Network. Or Try to press and hold Mute key
(usually on top of device) to place device in standby mode to conserve battery life. Turn the
radio/device back on when you're in a better coverage area.

Change Battery Graph to Numerical Value:

1. Rather than looking at signal bars, you can change the coverage indicator to show 'signal
strength' in digital (dBm) format. While at the home (icon) screen, hold down the ALT key
while you type NMLL. The bars change to digital mode. A lower number is better, and
anything between -90 to -50 dBm is good.
2. To get the signal bars back, repeat the process: hold down the ALT key while you type
NMLL.

Help Me Screen:

1. While holding down the ALT key -AND- the Left Shift key at the same time, press the letter
'h'. This brings up the "Help Me!" screen that lists detailed device information including
software version, pin, IMEI, uptime, signal strength, battery level, file free, and file total.

Event Log:

1. Hold down the ALT while you type LGLG. This brings up the event log where you can clear
events (frees some memory). This can be useful to technicians for advanced trouble-
shooting/diagnosis.

Include Phone # or PIN # in a Email Message using AutoText:

In the message body, type the following AutoText entries followed by the spacebar to insert information into a message:

1. mypin - Inserts BlackBerry PIN number.
2. mynumber - Inserts BlackBerry Phone number.
3. myver - Inserts BlackBerry Model number / Software version.
4. mydcid - Inserts DIRECT CONNECT number (on Sprint/Nextel devices).

Switching to Menu While on the Phone:

1. While on a phone call, press Menu key and choose Home Screen. You can view information on your BlackBerry such as check your calendar or look up an address. Remember to press Green phone key to go back to phone app to disconnect your call.
2. While on a phone call, press Menu key and choose Notes to take notes while on a call. Saved call notes appear in Messages folder as a call log entry, along with your emails.

Reboot Your BlackBerry:

1. Remove / Replace battery OR
2. While holding down the ALT key -AND- the Left Shift key at the same time, Press the Delete key until BlackBerry reboots. This will reboot your BB. No stored data will be lost.

75 really useful iPad tips and tricks

Running two apps at once will be the ultimate iPad timesaver, but until Apple releases iPhone OS 4.0 later this year the iPad can't multitask third-party applications.

Of course, that doesn't mean there aren't lots of neat time-saving tricks hidden away in the iPad just waiting to be discovered.

* Apple iPad review (Wi-Fi version)
* Apple iPad 3G review

Here are our favourite 75 iPad tips, and because the iPad runs the same OS as the iPhone you'll find that many of these tips will work just as well on that device, too.

1. Quick volume mute

Unlike the iPhone, there's no dedicated mute button on the iPad. However, you can still cut the sound in a hurry if you need to pretend you're doing something serious instead of watching the latest YouTube viral. Simply keep the 'Volume down' button depressed and the sound will mute.

2. Add extra apps to your tray

There are four apps in the iPad's Dock (the shelf along the bottom of the Home Screen) by default, but you can have up to six apps here for quick access. Press and hold any icon on the Home Screen until the icons start to wobble, then drag two more apps to your Dock.

3. Save time using Spotlight

Instead of wading hopelessly through your music library looking for that one song you want, or endlessly hacking through your Contacts. It's much quicker to make use of the Spotlight search - it can search both iPod and Contacts. Flick right on the Home screen to access Spotlight search, or press the Home button. It also works for launching apps.

4. Redefine your iPad Home button

Double-clicking the Home button takes you to the home screen by default, but you can redefine its action in General - Home. To help save you time you can set it to bring up Spotlight search or the iPod application.

iPad home button

5. Make use of suggestions

As you type you'll notice that the iPad guesses at the word you're typing. To choose this suggestion simply stop typing the word and tap the space bar. If you're typing a lot of text then this can be a real time saver.

iPad suggestions

6. Enable Autofill

Save time filling out web forms in Safari by making use of Autofill. In Settings choose Safari - AutoFill, then select Use Contact Info to autofill information from the Contacts app, or Names & Passwords.

iPad autofill

7. Add a web page to the iPad home screen

If you visit a web page frequently then save time ponderously locating it in your Safari bookmarks by adding it as an icon to your Home screen. Tap the + icon in Safari then tap "Add to Home Screen".

iPad home screen

8. Quicker websites

Save time typing web addresses in Safari by using the iPad's ".com" key when typing in a URL. A little-known timesaver is that if you hold down the .com key you get access to a menu that offers a .co.uk option, too.

iPad web address entry

9. Turn iPad caps lock on

To type a capital letter on the Onscreen Keyboard you first tap the left or right shift key, then the letter. If you need to type a whole word in caps this can be painful. Save time typing in caps by turning the caps lock on. To do this double tap on either shift key.

iPad caps lock

10. Use the magnifying glass

You're entering text but you realise you've made a mistake a couple of lines back. You either fumble about with your finger trying to get back to the exact place, or you use the magnifying glass. Touch and hold your finger in the right area and the magnifying glass appears, enabling you to fine tune your insertion point.

iPad magnifying glass

11. Use a custom wallpaper

Like the iPhone, you can use a custom wallpaper. First, use Safari to find the image you want. (Try Interfacelift.com, which has iPad-sized images.)

View the image, then press and hold on the screen and select Save Image. Now, go to Settings, Brightness & Wallpaper. Flick to the right, go to Saved Photos, and select the image. Press the Set Lock Screen or Set Home Screen option, or Both.

iPad wallpaper

12. Control iPad notifications

Have you ever played Tap Tap Revenge on the iPhone? Good, then you know how annoying notifications can be. These messages pop up on the iPad as well. but you can control them. Go to Settings, Notifications, and configure which alerts (and accompanying sounds) will appear.

iPad notifications

13. Read iPad books in portrait

You may be tempted to read e-books in landscape mode - with the Apple iBooks app, you'll have a few more on-screen aids and a book spine. The spine, though, has this fuzzy pattern that actually draws your eyes away from the words and ruins the immersion of the e-book. Go portrait instead.

iPad ibooks

14. Password protection

You can password-protect apps like iTunes so that a family member can't buy every U2 record with your credit card. Go to Settings, then General, then Restrictions. Press Enable Restrictions and type a password, then turn on the restrictions you want for the apps available. Note that this password is different from your iTunes password - you'll need to tap in both.

iPad password protection

15. Keep a cloth handy

Despite the iPad's oleophobic coating to keep smudges from accumulating on the screen, they still build up. Keep a cloth handy to wipe off grime, or use a kit like the one from Griffin.

16. Charge at night

It might seem obvious, but the best way to charge the iPad is overnight - it takes a good four to five hours for a full charge from near empty.

17. Use the Kindle reader

Amazon offers the free Kindle reader for iPad, and it is a welcome addition. All of your Amazon e-book purchases will be available immediately, and Amazon prices are much better than iBooks.

18. Use an Apple keyboard

Any Apple Wireless Keyboard will work with the iPad. In fact, you can prop up the device without the expensive dock, use the Pages app to type up long documents, or reply to emails.

19. Shake Facebook

The Facebook app loads in a 1/8 view, which is lame. But, it works the same as it does on the iPhone: you can shake the iPad (gently) to reload your Facebook page quickly.

20. Go full-screen with ABC

It might not seem possible at first, but the ABC Player app - which lets you watch TV shows on the iPad, but only from that network - starts in a vertical view. Once you play a show, though, you can turn the iPad horizontally and the show will play in full-screen landscape mode.

21. Touch differently

For those used to the iPhone, there is a new art to using the iPad. With the Photos app, for example, you can control your shots in new ways - try pressing with two fingers in the all photos view. You can then spin the photo and slide it around. (This works exactly like a Microsoft Surface table.)

iPad photos

22. Expand your Home

There are 11 home screens available, and you can drag icons to the right of the main Home screen at anytime, not just when you load new apps.

iPad home screens

23. Re-install deleted apps

Once you buy an app, you can always re-install it even if you delete it from your device. Just go to the App Store and buy the app again. You will see a prompt that you have already bought this app and an option to re-install it without having to pay for it again.

24. Connect to an HD

You can connect the iPad to your television. You'll need the Apple iPad Dock Connector to VGA Adapter, which connects to the 30-pin port on the iPad and to the VGA port on your HD.

25. Use 802.11a for reliable streaming

If you want the most reliable Wi-Fi signal for streaming videos from, say, YouTube.com, use a router that supports 802.11a, which does not have the best range but does not conflict with the 802.11g signal used by microwave ovens, baby monitors, and other wireless devices.
